MEERUT: Post offices in the city were abuzz with activity on Monday as employees geared up for the 'National Postal Week'.
The celebrations -- from October 9 to October 15 -- are aimed at creating awareness about the role of the postal sector in the lives of people and business and its contribution to social and economic development. The aim is to create awareness about the role and activities of India Post.
Giving information on the endeavour, Prateek Jhajhariya, senior superintendent, Post Office, Meerut division, said, "As part of the National Postal Week, the Department of Posts will be celebrating various days. The Savings Bank Day was on October 10, Mail Day on October 12, Philately Day on October 13, Postal Life Insurance Day on October 14 and Business Development Day on October 15 to focus on various services provided by the department."
As part of the campaign, students of various schools visited the head post office in Meerut Cantt and were educated on services such as speed post, express/business parcel, business post, e-post, money remittance services etc.
Discussing the week-long celebrations, Arvind Kumar, senior post master, Meerut Cantt post office, said, "Instructions were passed to postmen regarding Mail Day. This is to ensure that all posts which reach the office today are delivered within 24 hours. We're also making sure that maximum staff is present during this week."
World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss capital, Berne.
It was declared as World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo in 1969 and since then, it is celebrated across the world to highlight the importance of postal services.
Meanwhile, on the occasion of Philately Day on Tuesday, residents will be able to open philately deposit accounts.
